This stock medical exhibit illustrates the physiology behind aspiration pneumonia using three images. The first image (left) shows the patient condition that causes aspiration pneumonia. Food enters the trachea instead of the esophagus, and smaller food particles pass deep into the lungs. The other two images (right) compare the normal oxygenation process in the lungs with oxygenation obstructed by inflammation, fluid buildup, and a thickening of the alveolar membrane (aspiration pneumonia).
