Item #: exh51999b
This stock medical exhibit illustrates an anterior lumbar discectomy using eight images. The first image gives a general orientation and shows the extent of the lumbar spine injuries. The second image describes the initial longitudinal excision in the anterior abdomen, and in the third graphic that incision is deepened and the abdominal contents and vessels are retracted to the right, revealing the anterior L4-5 disc space. The fourth image shows a flap-based window cut into the disc with a scalpel and the removal of the disc material with a rongeur. Next, the removal of the vertebral endplates with a high speed drill, sizing the disc space for cage placement, is demonstrated. The sixth graphic portrays the insertion of a BAK fusion cage, packed with donor bone, into the intervertebral space. At last, the post-operative appearance is shown using a sagittal view of the lumbar vertebrae, allograft, fusion cage in the L4-5 space, and decompressed neural elements. The final image is an actual post-operative film print of the post-operative condition.
