This series of medical illustrations depicts late stage compartment syndrome with resulting necrosis of the muscle tissue in the lower leg, and the subsequent muscle debridement surgery. The first two mages depict normal anatomy, displaying the location of neural, vascular, muscular and skeletal elements in the lower leg. The next medical illustration shows swelling and compression in the anterior and lateral compartments, damaging the nerves, artery and veins of the region. The third drawing shows necrosis (tissue death) in the region. And the final drawing shows a surgeon removing the dead muscle tissue.
