These medical illustrations depict anterior lumbar discectomy surgery with artificial disc replacement. During this procedure, an incision is made in the lower abdomen, and the peritoneum and abdominal contents are retracted. After the blood vessels are mobilized to expose the L3-4 disc, the disc material is removed with a rongeur. Using a curette, the disc space is prepared to receive the artificial disc. The artificial disc prosthesis is then placed in the disc space.
