This stock medical exhibit depicts an L3-4 disc herniation in a series of illustrations. The first illustration shows a sagittal view of the lumbar spine. In this illustration, an L3-4 disc herniation is depicted. The herniation is shown impinging on the cauda equina of the spinal cord. Other featured structures are L2, L3, L4, L5 and S1 vertebral bodies, as well as intervertebral discs between them. The second illustration shows a posterior view of a caucasian female with the skeletal and peripheral nervous systems highlighted within the figure. Areas of pain from the herniation are highlighted in red, including the lower back, hips, left thigh and knee. One of the major nerves affected by the herniation is the sciatic nerve.
